In the news today:

According to The Daily Star and Sky Sports News, Liverpool have launched their effort to seal a move for Arsenal’s Gaël Clichy.

The Merseyside club have had problems at left-back for numerous seasons now, with Fábio Aurélio, Paul Konchesky and Emiliano Insúa all failing to make the grade.

Having sealed a £20m move for Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson, Dalglish is thought to have turned his attentions to Arsenal’s French left-back as he looks to rebuild Liverpool’s stuttering reputation.

With a £5m prepared, Liverpool seem set to steal a march on other another interested, Inter Milan.

With Clichy heading into his final year of contract with Arsenal, it is likely that he will leave this summer if a deal on an extention cannot be found.

I would love for a cash + clichy deal to make way for a quality CB such as Cahill, Vertonghen, Sakho. Personally i think Vermaelen can take over the LB role he has played there for Belgium and Ajax!!

I think in Traore, Gibbs and Botelho we have 3 players that can share the left back responsibility for next season (20 matches each) until one of them proves he is ready. What we need is 2 powerful centre halves (preferably one right (Samba or Subotic) and one left (Vertonghen or Sakho) allowing Vermaelen to move into the DM role to really put pressure on Song and on occassions play alongside him. Koscielny Bartley and Djourou would be able back up for centre half. Sell Eboue, Squillaci and Clichy and buy another right back to rival Sagna and Jenkinson. Jagielka would be great as he can play CH and DM as well.

    So in summary for defence
    Sell – Squillaci, Eboue, Clichy – £15m
    Buy – Jagielka, Samba, Vertonghen – £35m

The £20m difference can be raised by selling Bendtner and Denilson.
