Clichy complacency seals Arsenal exit

WTTGT Writer: Reiss Silva

In 2003, Gaël Clichy signed for Arsenal from French side, Cannes and for three seasons he was understudy to Ashley Cole. During this time Gaël Showed great potential which was probably a reason why the club decided to part with Cole in the summer of 2006.

Clichy enjoyed a solid season as our first choice left-back and in the following season was even better as he was named in the PFA Team of the Year. At the time youngsters, Armand Traoré and Kieran Gibbs, were showing signs of development which meant Clichy had to keep up his level of performances.

However, just lately many supporters have become frustrated with the Frenchmen’s inconsistency. When he is on form there is no doubting his ability, but this has become less and less frequent.

There are times when he seemed to lack enthusiasm and the desire. When Arsenal came up against teams that pile on pressure the Gunners are in possession, Clichy showed a clumsy side that has cost the side on a occasions.

There are many factors which could be contributing to this. Firstly, neither Traoré nor Gibbs have managed to force their way into the team. Gibbs undoubtedly has talent but injuries are holding him back.

As a result Clichy has maybe realised he is the only choice to play in that position which in turn has affected motivation and performance levels.

Another reason could be that he has become fed up with the team fading out towards the end of the season time and time again.

I don’t think the latter is a valid reason as the only ones that can deliver a trophy to the Emirates are the players themselves. In fact, in my opinion the failure of the team to win a Cup should act as a motivation to silence their critics.

So Arsenal’s most senior player could is on the move. Who would I recommend as his replacement? Well, Leighton Baines is a great shout for this but there are many more top players to replace the Frenchman out there.

I strongly believe that he will be a shadow of himself at City. It is sad to see Clichy leaving as undoubtedly he has been our best left back 4 the last 4-5 years… I am just upset by the unloyalty of the players….

He may be too raw but what about Miquel to replace Clichy (if he leaves). He impressed against Orient.

Not trying to sound like my mum but.. It's disloyal not unloyal. Either way I think it's unfair criticism, the fact is. He's been a perfect servant to this club for the last eight years. Come in for a fair bit of criticism from the fans this year. Hasn't one a trophy since he was a teenager. Probably got offered comparative peanuts to extend his contract at Arsenal and is leaving what appears to be a sinking ship for the richest football club in the world which is rapidly on the rise and probably doubled his wages in the process. Not being emotive about it, I'd say he's making a pretty sensible career decision.
I don't like the exodus either but you can't just put it down to loyalty and put the blame at the players feet, when the fans, manager, chairman and owners have all played a part in making this club less appealing to play for than it was a few years ago.

i think wenger didnt want him to stay.otherwise he would have tried harder tokeep him.for a few seasons he has been our weak link.defensively he has not been great.wenger never comes out in public and says we are selling this player.it lowers the price of a player.so i think wenger would have told clichy thet he can leave if a good offer comes because wenger has seen that he is not worth a new contract with much higher wages.as for nasri this thing is likely to drag for a some more time because wenger really wants to keep him.but its interesting to see whether wenger give gibbs a chance or buys some new left back .because its unlikely wenger will put vermaelen in left back.he is one of best center backs in prem and CBs are already hard to find.i am actually happy that clichy is leaving.it can be a risk but we are not doing so good already.so the change is worth it.whatever it is.buying a new left back or promoting gibbs.

Jose Enrique – perfect replacement – Good technical ability, solid defender, also in last year of his contract, refuses to extend his contract at St. James so would cost somewhere around the same fee clichy went for

I'm a City fan, I'm not 100% certain on Clichy I've seen him a bit but obviously I haven't watched him week in week out so I can't judge him plus I can't complain with the position we are in so I won'tt have a go at any signings we make now, worth going through all the crap lol (well maybe apart from jo). But I just wanted to comment as it's really nice to see Arsenal fans not slagging us off for purchasing one of their players, wish you luck for the future.
