ARSENAL 1-0 SWANSEA
Arsenal registered their first three points of season with a scrappy win over Premier League new boys Swansea City.
After that humiliating defeat at Old Trafford, Arsene Wenger included all five of his deadline day signings in his squad as Per Mertesacker and Mikel Arteta mad their Arsenal bows, with Yossi Benayoun, Andre Santos and Ju Young Park all starting on the bench.
It was new signing Arteta who created the first chance of the match minutes after the kick-off as he fed Aaron Ramsey but the Welshman failed to hit the target from close range. Swansea, renowned for their passing football, went close through Danny Graham as he forced Szczensy into a good save.
As the home side searched for that all important opening goal, Andrei Arshavin slipped in Theo Walcott but he saw his goal bound effort cleared off the line. Arsenal didn’t have to wait too long to go ahead as Arshavin capitalised on a comical goalkeeping mistake to slot into a empty net. The Gunners went close again through Walcott but Arsenal went in at half time 1-0 up.
It was the visitors who had the first chance of note in the second half when Scott Sinclair saw his free-kick hit the crossbar, as the hosts breathed a huge sigh of relief. This was before van Persie clipped the outside of the visitors’ post at the other end. As the match wore on Swansea threatened to grab an equaliser and came very close in the dying minutes when Graham blasted over from inside the penalty box.
In the end the Gunners managed to see out the game and take the points, in a match which may just kick-start their season, it wasn’t an impressive performance but in the end it’s the result that counts.
