Gunners to move for Barcelona forward?

If this rumour is true, then Arsenal fans may well have good reason to be excited.

In recent years, the likes of Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas (among others) have moved from the Emirates to the Nou Camp. Perhaps, though, it is time for a big name to move in the opposite direction.

It is not, however, the usual suspect. Barcelona have made it very clear that they wish to keep star striker David Villa, who has recently hit a rich vein of form, and did not seem like a very Wenger-esque signing anyway, owing to the fact that he is over the age of 30. The man in question this time is Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez. After having moved from Udinese to Barcelona for a fee that started out at £22 million, and rose to £31 million after bonuses, big things were expected from the player. However, while not having played badly, he has drifted in and out of the first team, and failed to put together the stellar run that many expected of him.

Being fairly young at 24, having obvious talent, and possessing a good work-rate are all things Wenger looks for in a potential signing, and the fact that he has now fallen down the pecking order means that he may be available at a cut-price, while the soon-to-be La Liga winners go chasing a defensive replacement for the aging Carles Puyol. It could all work out well for everyone involved. Goodness knows Arsenal fans would like to see a big name signed to herald a return to challenging for honours in seasons to come.
