Do Arsenal have enough to win the title next season? No so what do they need?

Will we see this again?

Will we see this again?

Without a shadow of a doubt, Arsenal play better football than anybody else in the Premier League. We know it, they know it – it’s a fact. However, free-flowing, attractive football doesn’t guarantee titles. It is now time for Arsene Wenger and the board to stand up and be counted: we need to sign players with the right ‘stuff’ to win the title next season.

Firstly, Arsenal need a centre-back. Per Mertesacker just isn’t the player that he was a few years ago and Laurent Koscielny needs a reliable partner at the heart of our defence. If truth be told, there aren’t many top defenders available right now but it might be worth taking a gamble on Everton’s John Stones. He is excellent with the ball at his feet and has a wide array of passing – and he would certainly suit Wenger’s strategy of working from the back.

Why are Arsenal not linked?

Why are Arsenal not linked?

But does Stones have that ‘stuff’ to lead Arsenal to a Premier League title? Probably not. In an ideal world, the Gunners would be able to prise Pepe from Real Madrid. Yes, he’s getting older and yes, he’s also not the player that he once was but he would still be a significant upgrade on Mertesacker. AND he’s made of the right stuff. Arsenal need that added bit of vigour and determination in defence – something they haven’t had since the days of Tony Adams and Sol Campbell.

On our day, we are the best team in the Premier League and if you are looking for fantastic, flowing football, then you should purchase Arsenal tickets ahead of next season. Mesut Ozil is arguably the best creative midfielder in European football and Alexis Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all be potent threats for the Gunners next season. If nothing else, we will purr and shine when the pressure is off but a clear lack of leaders in key areas could haunt us once again… unless Wenger acts effectively in the summer transfer window.

Last year, the Frenchman opted to place all of his faith and trust in Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck. At the time, we all knew it was the wrong decision and Wenger’s judgement cost us any chance of winning the Premier League title. This summer, he simply cannot avoid signing a striker – especially after Welbeck’s cruel blow in the 2-2 draw at Manchester City. Unfortunately, we will now be without the England man for the next nine months.

The pressure is on Wenger to sign a world class striker this summer. Whether that’s Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain or Zlatan Ibrahimovic, we don’t care. Arsenal NEED to make a major statement in the transfer window. Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City are already making moves and we risk lagging behind unless Wenger signs a proven forward. Those three players all have the right ‘stuff’ and are capable of notching at least 20 goals next season – which might be enough to carry Arsenal to the title.

Arsenal simply cannot afford to fail again this season. We won’t stand for it any longer. Over to you, Mr Wenger…
