As the transfer window approaches, Arsène will need to look to abort his flair only style and add some much needed steel to a vulnerable side full of youthful inexperience.
For the Gunners to break their trophy duck, they need to recruit anti-footballers. Players who will take no nonsense and sit back to watch the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Sami Nasri take the game to the opposition in the attacking third.
Balance is the key to success in the Premier League and the Emirates outfit just don’t have that balance. Players in the mould of Christopher Samba, Gennaro Gattuso, and Scott Parker would aid Song and hand the Gunners the alternative mentality needed to win during the difficult parts of the season.
When results are going against Wenger’s boys it’s hard to see who is likely to dig them out of a hole and give the team a boost. Strong willed players are a necessity this summer and without adding these characters into the dressing room, it’ll be another year gathering dust in the cabinet and pressure will really begin to build on the astute Frenchman.
Premiership sides are beginning to find the ways in which to deal with Arsenal away from the Emirates, and it seems to be just to frustrate them; allow the North Londoners time and space and they will slice open any defence but close the space down and add niggling fouls, and the players and staff seem to show an inability to remain placid, ultimately going into self-destruct mode.
The substance over style players available in the market today have to be the main priority for Wenger if the Gunners faithful are to see any silverware in the near future.
I agree the substance of the (well written) article. Wenger's latest team has completely lost the balance between skill / strength ; attack / defence ; passing / shooting ; open play / set pieces ; purist football / winning determination.
However I would add that (particularly at the Emirates where nearly every team is over the moon at a low scoring draw) the whole world has long since known how to play against the Arsenal ! Meanwhile Wenger has shown no answer – no tactics, no variation, no change in formation. Nothing more than ……. I know I am, right and all the fans are wrong.
err correct me if im wrong but werent we the best away side last season, or atleast very much up there
