Reality Bites

Ah Winona Ryder back in the 90s xx
We screwed this season up, pure and simple and the players know this and I hope the manager does too.
Performances against City, Bayern, Everton and Watford just this past weekend have proved this. We have the ability to take control of and boss games at will, we just haven’t managed to do it in all games, against all opposition.
We were leading the Premier League at New Years and we are already the only team to have led at the turn of the year and not gone on to win it on 3 occasions. It looks like we will increase our record of capitulation to 4.
03, 08, 14……..16?
Chelsea have led the Premier League on 4 occasions on Jan 1st and on each occasion gone on to win the title. Arsenal will have led the division on 4 occasions at New year and on each occasion thrown it away. Let that sink in!!
This years resolution “Must win title”
Mezut was quoted last week as saying;
“Looking at our season so far, we have to be honest and admit that we screwed up ourselves. We did not play to our potential in the games against the so-called smaller teams. You immediately get punished for that in the Premier League. But we still have a chance of winning the title. We have to hope Leicester and Tottenham slip up and then make the most of it.”

On the offensive
Following this outburst, Wenger went on the offensive:
“The statement is not welcome, because we have to believe, no matter if it’s just one chance in 100, we have to believe. We only have a real chance if we believe.”
But is Wenger right to critique Ozil for telling it as it is?
By my reading of Ozil’s statement, he’s not throwing in the towel, he’s just telling it as it is.
As all honest fans see it.
We’ve fcuked this one up, we’ve got an outside chance, we’ll fight till the end, but deep down, we all know this title was there for the taking and we didn’t take it.

Telling it like it is
Obviously, the team need to fight until the fat lady sings, but once that happens, Arsene should then praise Mezut for being so honest and admit that this is the one that he and the team let slip away.

Completely agree with Ozil, he’s right, he’s accepted it without any lame excuses. I have more respect for a player being truthful than I do for a manager who refuses to accept and acknowledge that same truth. Especially a player who is normally quiet.
Its just occurred to me that Arsene has acquired a title after all Dave. You have just handed it to him. He is now the only manager to have topped the league four times in January but did not win it. That must say something.
