Arsenal compound Man United’s miserable weekend, as the race for the title hots up! – AWFC Journal

What a win! Convincing, impressive, dominant…you choose.

Women

Still top of the league

The 2-0 win at Leigh Sports Village means we go into the international break at the top of the table, one point ahead of Chelsea. Well done, ladies.

Yesterday’s game was about getting right on track after a disappointing draw in the North London Derby and rebuffing Chelsea’s attempts to take the top spot, something we did quite brilliantly. We were on top of Manchester United from the very first minutes, we scored twice and hit the bar on two occasions, with Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema, while creating lots of chances – especially from the left flank with Katie McCabe.

A very complete performance, despite some absences, of whch both Jonas Eidevall and the team can be very proud.

Today I would like to talk about Vivianne Miedema, because I feel that she’s not getting the recognition she deserves despite her unbelievable record; in my opinion, she goes under a lot of scrutiny because of her outstanding qualities and the expectations that are generated by that, which is unfair for a player who seems to constantly break records and is still expected to do more, score more, be more decisive, assist more, run more, lead more.

What else is Viv meant to do to convince everyone of her uniqueness?

Super Viv

People moan the she never scores in big games, that she is stats-padding against lesser teams, that she only scores tap-ins and other nonsense, yet numbers are telling a completely different story but some people seem to be blind to that.

Rant over, sorry. Going back to the game against Manchester United, my heart skipped a beat when Kim Little limped off shortly before half time, not necessarily because of the ongoing match but for the all-important fixtures ahead: the idea of her missing out on the FA Cup Final and the Champions League fixtures against Barcelona and Hoffenheim was frightening. Luckily Jonas Eidevall was quick to downplay the extent of Kim Little’s injury, saying that the substitution was precautionary so hopefully she will be available after the break.

Jonas Eidevall also reported on the injuries currently keeping Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi and Simone Boye Sørensen, claiming that he hopes to have the trio back for the FA Cup Final against Chelsea, scheduled for December, 5th. The American forward and the Danish defenders will stay back and work on their fitness, instead of joining their national teams, while the former Aston Villa midfielder will join Japan’s camp and get some minutes ahead of her comeback.

Having them available would be a huge boost for the upcoming games against Chelsea, Barcelona, Leicester, Hoffenheim and Brighton, especially as players start to look a bit fatigued.

That’s all for the time being, enjoy the break because next month is going to be busy and tough, possibly the first season-defining set of fixtures of this campaign.
