Arsenal’s recent signings have been a revelation for the club. Alexis Sanchez is a proven world-class player, Mathieu Debuchy is an experienced right back capable of performing for Arsenal, David Ospina is a quality goalkeeper and finally Calum Chambers is a future prospect with bags of potential. With those great signings, we are probably just one more away from being definite Premier League and Champions League contenders.
In recent years, teams who try to play physical and stop Arsenal’s passing game and possession have been easily successful. Arsenal always had beautiful technical players, like Alex Hleb, Cesc Fabregas, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta etc. but lacked the physical player who would protect the back four and orchestrate Arsenal’s transition from defense to attack.
Players of that caliber are rare, but the likes of Sergio Busquets, Javi Martinez and Nemanja Matic certainly come to mind as perfect examples. Our great teams had players like Patrick Vieira, Gilberto Silva and Edu who had that in them, and they excelled at it, leading Arsenal to several titles in the process. A true defensive midfielder not only stabilises the team, but also gives other players the freedom to show their attacking qualities (Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil etc.).
Manchester United have Michael Carrick do the job, Chelsea had the likes of Michael Essien, John Obi Mikel and recently Nemanja Matic while European giants like Barcelona have Sergio Busquets and Bayern Munich have Javi Martinez and Bastian Schweinsteiger. With that being said, every team needs that kind of player to stabilise and dominate physical teams.
Recent rumors have said that Jack Wilshere will be given the chance to play that role, but we all know that having a midfield with Jack and Aaron Ramsey would make us too exposed. Jack’s qualities are his bursts and the way he takes on players in the process, so it wont fit his style of play. Other options in the team are Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta, who performed well last season but don’t have that physical stature and aren’t getting any younger, and Abou Diaby, who is a serious injury prone player.
All in all, if Arsene Wenger signs a player with the qualities mentioned, Arsenal will be a real force to be reckoned with in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Who would you like to see in the defensive midfield role for Arsenal?
