Arsenal in Sydney: Match day 2
Western Sydney Wanderers vs Arsenal Saturday 15th July 2017
The perfect opportunity for a group of Cyber Gooners to finally meet up for real.
From left to right @Lizzie_g, @GlenelgGunner, @GunnerSharpy and yours truly @wellmington.
A number of you may find this strange, but we all met on twitter, tweeting at all hours, before, during and after matches, sharing our thoughts, hopes, fears and generally anything we could think about The Arsenal. Living in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney, the chances of us all meeting were very slim. However, tonight, The Arsenal made it happen and for that, we are forever thankful.
Tonight was also my first opportunity to fully christen my daughter Mya, into The Arsenal church.
She is now a fully-fledged Gooner.
I think she has chosen her favourite player.
I believe by all accounts she had a ripper of a time (she is Australian and that’s how they talk)
In addition, for a 6 year old, she seems to have a very insightful very of football. When WSW scored, she said:
Come on Arsenal you are better than this!
Very knowledgeable for one so young.
As for the game, sorry, I spent a lot of the time making sure Mya had the time of her life.
We won 3-1, Giroud, Rambo and Eleny scored. We hit the post twice in the second half and WSW were a much sterner test than Sydney FC, much more physical and more up for it than the Sky Blues were on Thursday night.
As Arsene said in the post-match conference:
164,000 fans watched the two games and it goes to show how big the support for the team is in Australia.
Personally, I would like to thank the team for making the trip to Australia and giving many Gooners their first and possibly only opportunity to see The Arsenal play in the flesh and live the match day experience.
I for one have had an absolute blast over the last four days.

I live in Bristol, England and hold an Arsenal season ticket. I sometimes begrudge having to make the six hour round trip to every ‘home’ game…forgetting that there are many Gooners around world who’d love the chance to do just that week in, week out.
Your great post is timely reminder that Arsenal is a world-wide family. I love the fact there are fellow fans on the other side of the globe and I’m glad some of them got the chance to see Arsenal in the flesh this past week (sounds like you had a good time!). I’m also proud of our club for making a real effort to engage with our Australian fans during this tour.
Love and respect to our fans all over the world.
Well said Marcus. I make a similar trip myself in time and distance. Dave
Cheers Marcus, as an ex pat, I now have experienced Arsenal in the UK & in Aus.
It takes some commitment to follow the team from here and its great to hear from fans who aren’t against us ‘foreign’ fans
thanks mate
