The Arsenal Mid-Season Awards (Part 1)

And as the first half of the season comes to a close, the champagne opens, the trophy’s are engraved and the players arrive for ‘The Arsenal Mid-Season Awards.

Your host for tonight will be Lucas Chambers, so take a seat, pour yourself a glass of champagne and enjoy your evening.

With the players in their seats, here is the shortlist for tonight:

One Game Wonder (So Far)

Surprise Of The Season (So Far)

Defender Of The Season (So Far)

Midfielder Of The Season (So Far)

Attacker Of The Season (So Far)

Young Player Of The Season (So Far)

Player Of The Seson (So Far)

One Game Wonder (So Far)

A Hale End graduate, a player with the same amount of starts as Nicolas Pepe for Arsenal this season but more goals than Ben White since he joined the club. This award could only be given to one man, but as we saw in 2003, anything is possible in football award ceremonies.

And for that reason…

The Winner is Karl Jacob Hein

Only joking, the winner is…. Reiss Nelson!

His performance in a 5-0 battering against Nottingham Forest earns him this award by a large margin. Showing the reward of using academy youngsters, Nelson came on in the 27th minute to replace injured Bukayo Saka, and he certainly didn’t refrain from humiliating the Garibaldi. Scoring two goals in quick succession, he didn’t just deny Forest any possibility of a win, but instead embarrassed them in front of 60,263 fans. But Nelson wasn’t done there, 4 minutes later he assisted Partey’s worldie in efforts to secure a place in the starting XI. Nelson hasn’t been granted his wish yet, but we hope he does in the new year.

Surprise Of The Season (So Far)

An award that is definitely closer than the previous. A special mention must go to Ben White’s superb performances at fullback, replacing injured Tomiyasu and Saliba who blew Premier League fans away with his dominance in the defence. But this award goes to a player that has the same amount of goals and assists than Martinelli, a player that is going to the World Cup, and most surprisingly, hasn’t got sent off this season.

So congratulations to…

Granit Xhaka!

Unlike 2019, I am not scared that Xhaka will swear at me, fight me or throw his award on the floor, so congrats to Xhaka for this achievement. In all seriousness, with the help of the gaffer, Xhaka has fulfilled Wenger’s expectations and turned into a midfield engine. He dominates the midfield, going forward he has 3.47 SCA p/90 and is now able to score goals inside the box instead of his trademark screamers. Defensively, he is very solid but Partly occupies the defensive duties very well, meaning Xhaka has more freedom to push forward and we are seeing the benefits at the moment. The Swiss international has 4 goals and 3 assists this season and he is showing no signs of stopping… or getting sent off, which is always a bonus.

Defender Of The Season (So Far)

Defender of the season so far… but this time it isn’t between Kolasinac, Mustafi, Sokratis and Chambers. A huge relief, and an opportunity for the progress in the candidates to reflect the progress the Gunners have made this season. In the appearances Tomiyasu, Tierney and Zinchenko have made this season, they have all been very good and if they had played more they may have more of a chance of being an award winner tonight. But for that reason, it is only really between three players, William Saliba, Ben White and Gabriel.

This man is going to the World Cup this Winter and is representing a flag with red and white.

Your defender of the season is… DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO SALIBAAAAA!

After spending 2 seasons on loan in his home nation, Saliba raised questions on how he will be used, if at all, this season. But Arteta has silenced the haters and proven the doubters wrong once again and proved why he made the right call on delaying Saliba’s league debut. After collecting ‘Ligue 1 Defender Of The Year’, Saliba made his Premier League debut against Palace this season and since then he has played every game in the league since. He is extremely comfortable on the ball and is a unit whilst defending, the stats don’t lie when saying he is 4th for dribblers tackled and 5th for pass completion. All round Saliba has been a beast at the back and I can’t wait to see him perform on the world stage at the World Cup this Winter.

Midfielder Of The Season (So Far)

Much like defender of the season, there are three possible winners tonight, but who will be the brightest star? Vieira has shown glimpses of quality in the Europa League and domestic cups but has very rarely featured in the league. The main possible winners are, Xhaka, Odegaard and Partey.

A huge congrats to… Granit Xhaka

Odegaard will be unlucky to miss out, newly appointed captain and always causing issues in the attacking third for the defenders, and Partey won’t be partying tonight. With that being said, Xhaka wins his 2nd award of the night. Xhaka has drastically improved his game this season as he dominates the midfield. We have already spoke about Xhaka’s superb season this evening so we will make it short and sweet. He has played with so much conviction this season and has been so reliable and guides this young team through hard periods of games and his hard work has payed off.

Xhaka Triumph

This is all we have time for in this half of the show, so stretch your legs, enjoy your snacks and pour yourself another glass of champagne and I will see you after the interval for 3 more awards!

To be continued …….
