Arsenal’s Up and Coming Players

Football boot closeupThroughout the Premier League era, Arsenal have been known as a club that likes to mix expensive imports with home grown talent. Overseas stars such as Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry have delighted Gunners fans, but those players have been backed by experienced England internationals including Tony Adams, Nigel Winterburn and David Seaman.

Arsenal continues to provide that balance in the modern day and, while the present squad aims to challenge for major honors, there are many exciting young players coming through the ranks.

Breaking Through

Anyone looking for football betting tips will be drawn to Arsenal, based on the team’s recent successes. Manager Mikel Arteta has turned the Gunners into genuine title prospects after a period when the club was struggling to even make the Champions League places.

Along with external signings such as Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz, Arsenal also have some home-grown players in the squad. Bukayo Saka came through the Gunners’ academy and is now one of the first choices in the England senior team.

Emile Smith Rowe played with Saka in the youth system and is now looking to re-establish himself in the side after a frustrating spell out through injury. They are notable academy graduates, but who is among the next generation of young Gunners looking to break through?

Loan Stars

A number of Arsenal academy players are currently out on loan at other clubs. Included in that list is a man who is aiming to become the Gunners’ next first choice goalkeeper.

Arthur Okonkwo spent 12 years with the youth team, and made two appearances for Arsenal’s Under 21 side, but he’s now on his third temporary loan. After spells with Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz, Okonkwo now plays between the posts at League Two side Wrexham.

At one point in the 2023/24 season, Okonkwo had the highest save percentage of any keeper in the top four leagues in England. Arsenal has two top class stoppers in David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale, but many expect Arthur Okonkwo to challenge for first team appearances next campaign.

Charlie Patino

Midfielder Charlie Patino spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Swansea City. It’s his second temporary deal after spending the previous season at Blackpool and both Championship clubs have helped with the development of this exciting young talent.

Patino has been compared to Jack Wilshere due to his ability to link defense into attack, and he’s another player expected to be given a chance at the Emirates before long. He’s so far made two senior appearances for Arsenal, scoring on his debut in the EFL Cup against Sunderland in December 2021.

Charles Sagoe Jr

Lining up alongside Charlie Patino at Swansea City is another product of the Arsenal youth academy. Charles Sagoe progressed through the Gunners’ ranks and made his senior debut against Brentford in an EFL Cup tie in September 2023.

The teenage striker subsequently joined Swansea on loan in February 2024. Opportunities at the Championship club have, however, been limited, and Sagoe only played two games as a substitute between February and April.

He’s an exciting prospect, and Charles Sagoe Jr will aim for a more productive loan spell next term.

Chido Obi

Young striker Chido Obi made global sporting headlines in November 2023, when he scored no fewer than ten goals in Arsenal Under 16s’ 14-3 demolition of their Liverpool counterparts. Obi was just 15 years of age, when he made this staggering achievement, so he’s the youngest player on this list, but he may be the most exciting.

The forward has since made his debut for the Gunners’ Under 21 side, so he’s developing quickly. Obi was born in Denmark andhas represented the Danes at Under 17 level. With seven goals in his first nine matches for Denmark’s Under 17’s Chido Obi promises to be a prolific striker moving forward.

Ethan Nwaneri

Another exciting midfielder from Arsenal’s youth academy, Ethan Nwaneri made headlines in September 2022, when he became the Premier League’s youngest ever player. Nwaneri made his debut against Brentford at the age of just 15, and he looked comfortable in the top flight.

The player’s chances have been limited since that history-making debut: Nwaneri has made just one further senior appearance for the Gunners in the 2023/24 season. He’s highly thought of at the club, and it seems likely that Ethan Nwaneri will be loaned out next term for some regular first team football.

Arsenal are enjoying a productive period, and the current squad is challenging for major honors, both domestically and in Europe. While the first team is settled, the personnel continue to evolve and manager Mikel Arteta will look for reinforcements.

As these youngsters show, the future looks exceptionally bright, and it will be fascinating to see these players develop over the next few seasons.
